The School of Medicine

After more than seventy five years of working in partnership, on Sunday 1 August 2004 Cardiff University and the University Of Wales College Of Medicine (UWCM) came together as one institution. With 5,000 staff, 22, 000 students and an annual turnover of £300 million, Cardiff University will have the size and span of expertise to establish itself as a world-class institution, undertaking research, learning and teaching of international distinction for the benefit of Wales and the wider world.

Cardiff University has 28 Schools which are divided into two colleges (the Wales College of Medicine, Biology, Life and Health Sciences and the College of Humanities and Sciences), the School of Medicine being part of the Wales College of Medicine, Biology, Life and Health Sciences.

Wound Healing Research Unit

The development of an outpatient wound clinic in 1972 to evaluate the management of surgical wounds by Professor L E Hughes, the then Professor of Surgery, led to an interest in the subject of wound healing which has continued to grow. This initial service was, at that time, provided by a small number of individuals devoting only part of their time to this work. By the end of the 1980s, it became apparent that the number of patient referrals was increasing rapidly, and a more comprehensive service was required.

In April 1991, the Wound Healing Research Unit was created as a totally self-funded group within the Department of Surgery at the School of Medicine, Cardiff University. Directed by Professor Tricia Price, the Unit now employs 27 individuals from multi-professional backgrounds dedicated to improving care and advancing knowledge in all aspects of wound healing and management. It provides a unique, comprehensive approach to the speciality and seeks to improve healthcare delivery to patients with chronic wounds such as leg ulcers, pressure sores, diabetic foot ulcers, and patients with problems of healing with acute/surgical wounds. With a wide-range of collaborations, the WHRU provides expertise in biological, biophysical, and clinical science research. It is possibly the largest multi-disciplinary unit in the world and is internationally recognised as a leader in the field of wound care.
